About Us
Breaking Barriers Language Learning started in the spring of 2014 with the hope to end the frustration and anxiety that seems to surround language learning for many students. In addition, there are very few (if any) tutoring companies that focus solely on language learning. This inspired the creation of Breaking Barriers Language Learning.
About Me
My name is Jennifer Paul. I graduated from Villanova University in 2006 with degrees in Spanish and in Education. I also earned my Masters in Education from Villanova in 2010. For the passed 15 years I have been a full time Spanish teacher at different schools in the area, first at Villa Joseph Marie High School in Holland, PA and then at Gwynedd Mercy Academy in Gwynedd Valley, PA. I currently teach at a charter school in Northeast Philadelphia. Although Breaking Barriers Language Learning is not affiliated with any of the schools, due to my teaching experiences, I have become very familiar with the different textbooks that high schools use, as well as the many questions and concerns that language students have. I usually know their questions before they even ask them, so I am very aware of where students struggle and can better help them understand these mistakes and concerns. I will be able to pinpoint exactly where your child is struggling with just one session of tutoring!
The Process
My tutoring process
The difference
What sets me apart
At your first session, I will talk to you (the student) about your study skills to try to pinpoint and diagnose the problem and the reason for why you are struggling. Usually these first diagnostic sessions last an hour and a half. I bring a language learning study guide (that I wrote) to go through what is already being done and determine any additional study skills that you can being to implement to increase classroom success. I also use the first session to review the basics of the language to start to fill in any learning gaps that can lead to confusion in the classroom.
If you are a student interested in language acquisition, the first session is less about diagnostics and more designed towards finding out what you already know about the language (if anything) and designing a program catered to your individual learning goals. Programs have been created that are catered to the needs of different jobs where Spanish may be required. Please inquire about your specific needs to learn more!
The difference
What sets me apart
I know the curriculum and the textbooks being used at most schools in the area. I know what is being covered in each chapter and will accommodate the tutoring to exactly what you/your child need to know for classroom success.
I give quizzes/tests to monitor vocabulary acquisition and understanding and application of grammar concepts. This helps to ensure classroom success and you will be able to SEE results of what you/your child is learning with me. Parents receive open communication of this progress and their grades with me. I will also share any other tips for what the student can do at home to continue to improve on their own.
Weekly sessions are recommended, but can be moved around or added for test/quiz dates or extra help with midterms/finals.
If using in person tutoring, I travel to you! I only ask that an adult of eighteen years or older is present during the tutoring sessions.
